Get Lean and Patient Centered Using the Patient Portal (Mark McNeill MD)

Interest in patient portals continues to increase as incentives through programs such as Meaningful Use and NCQA PCMH encourage their adoption. Implementation is becoming increasingly common. What is not common however is any meaningful change in workflow or office operations. The patient portal presents numerous opportunities to improve workflow, reduce cost and improve patient care and communication. The solo practice of Dr. Mark McNeill, Trillium Family Medicine, was started over two years ago with a workflow built around the patient portal. At Trillium Family Medicine the technologies of the patient portal are leveraged to accomplish open access/real-time scheduling, secure patient-doctor messaging, increased patient engagement, and reduced staff size. Barriers to access are removed, such as complicated phone trees and complicated appointment schedules. Availability and time per patient are significantly increased. Staff size is reduced (1.75 FTE per MD). This model does not require a monthly fee and accepts all insurances including Medicare and Adult Medicaid. The goal of this lecture is to share lessons learned and best practices in creating a low-overhead, web-based practice using the patient portal.
