Authors: Esforzado N, Morales JM Abstract Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a factor that reduces the survival of the patient and the graft in renal transplant (RT). The availability of directly acting antivirals agents (DAAs), very effective and with an excellent safety profile, it allows eradicate HCV from patients with kidney disease, and this is a revolutionary radical change in the natural evolution of this infection, until now without effective and safe treatment for the contraindication use of interferon in kidney transplant patients. The efficiency of some DAAs for all genotypes, even in patients with re...

This study aimed to assess knowledge about STDs and the associated factors among dermatological patients. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 622 patients at Vietnam National Hospital of Dermatology and Venereology (NHD). Structured questionnaires were used to investigate the knowledge about STDs. A multivariate Tobit regression was employed to determine factors associated with knowledge about STDs. The percentage of patients knowing that syphilis was an STD was highest (57.8%), followed by herpes warts (57.7%) and HIV/AIDS (57.4%). By contrast, 26.6% and 17.2% of patients knew that chlamydia and hepatitis C were S...

In this activity, which is based on recent live meetings held in Baltimore and Cambridge, Maryland, clinicians practicing on the front-lines of the intersecting hepatitis C and opioid epidemics offer thought-provoking perspectives on identifying HCV among people with substance use disorders who live in urban and rural healthcare settings and successfully engaging them in care to achieve better patient and community outcomes. Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to: Evaluate patients with, or at risk of, hepatitis C virus (HCV) i...

Semin Liver Dis DOI: 10.1055/s-0039-1681031Prediction of future hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk in the sizable chronic liver disease population is an urgent unmet need to enable regular HCC screening for early detection. Germline deoxyribonucleic acid polymorphisms likely represent etiology-specific host factors that determine HCC susceptibility, including single nucleotide polymorphisms in EGF, IFNL3, MICA, and TLL1 in hepatitis C with or without active viral infection, and PNPLA3, TM6SF2, and MBOAT7 in metabolic liver diseases. Transcriptome-based prognostic liver signature in diseased liver tissue has been associate...

Semin Liver Dis DOI: 10.1055/s-0039-1678727Immune dysregulation and accumulation of leukocytes is a hallmark of adult chronic liver diseases. Progressive hepatic inflammation can lead to fibrosis and cirrhosis with a high risk of liver failure or hepatocellular cancer (HCC). Recent advances have been made in the treatment of liver disease including the development of highly effective antiviral therapy for hepatitis C and the potential of immunotherapy for HCC. Despite this, the majority of other chronic liver diseases including alcoholic liver disease, fatty liver disease, and cholestatic diseases do not respond to convent...
