We are grateful to Drs. Grother and Wilson for their comments on review of our recent article on altruism in internal medicine residents at Brown University.1 Their survey reporting UK undergraduate medical students feeling less able to engage in altruistic activities after entering medical school, despite a desire to do so, is important to our work as educators. We presume that altruism and the desire to help others begins prior to entry into medical school, and their survey suggests it may also play a role in prompting teens to enter the medical field.
