As Fertility Rates Fall in U.S., Gap Widens Between Rural and Urban Counties

Highlights the results of a recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on fertility rates in the U.S. Rural areas have been associated with higher fertility rates and worse birth outcomes than urban or suburban areas. The age at which women first become mothers has risen across the board, but a gap remains between urban and rural areas. In 2017, the average for rural counties was 24.5 years of age and the average for urban was 27.7 years of age.
