The pathogenesis and epidemiology of lipedema are uncertain, and its diagnosis often delayed. Lipedema almost exclusively affects women, and a link to sex hormones is likely. The metabolic risk of this accumulation of fat in the lower limbs is not known, and weight loss has no impact on the morphology of the lower limbs. Due to the aesthetic discomfort and frequent initial misdiagnosis which results in inappropriate treatment, this condition can lead to significant psychological suffering for the patient. A better understanding of this disease is essential to the proper diagnosis and support for these patients, as well as guiding them in the effective care. PMID: 30278848 [PubMed - in process]
