Participatory Transaction in Dance/Movement Therapy

This article has two purposes: (a) to describe the intersections among dance/movement therapy, transpersonal participatory theory, and experiential education; and (b) to discuss the practice insights that arose from the creation of a conference workshop in relation to this theoretical integration. The author presented a workshop in Prague, Czech Republic, at the International Transpersonal Conference (ITC) in September 2017. This workshop involved an exploration of the transformational aspects of movement, intersubjectivity, and cocreated meaning elicited in dance/movement therapy, and the formation and performance of group narrative. This paper explores the theoretical underpinnings that guided the construction of this conference workshop in dance/movement therapy, integrating theory from multiple disciplines. The paper will also explore the value of, and issues pertaining to, conference workshop construction. The termparticipatory transaction will be introduced, defining a phenomenon whereby all members of an educational experience, in the act of cocreation, receive benefits therein.
