Postoperative outcomes based on patient participation in a presurgery education and weight management program

The prevalence of obesity in the United States has steadily increased over the past 5 decades, with approximately 35% of adults classified as obese (body mass index [BMI]>30 kg/m2) and 6.3% with Class III or severe obesity (BMI ≥40 kg/m2) [1,2]. One of the most successful treatment options for severe obesity is bariatric surgery, wherein the majority of patients experience a 50% to 75% reduction in excess weight within 6 months of surgery [3]. However, weight recidivism may occur approximately 2 years postsurgery [4] and is often attributed to reduced motivation [5], reemergence of unhealthy behaviors [6], stress [7], and limited social support [8].
