Obesity has increased at an alarming rate over the last few decades; so much so that it is now considered a global epidemic. Obesity is linked to several associated conditions that decrease life expectancy and increase health care costs. Direct medical costs associated with obesity include preventive, diagnostic, and treatment services. In 2008 dollars, these costs were estimated to be $147 billion.
