Jul 8, Fritz Perls: Today in the History of Psychology (8th July 1893)

Fritz Perls was born. A pioneering figure in the field of counseling, Perls along with his wife Laura founded and developed the Gestalt school of psychotherapy in the late 1940's and 1950's; drawing on an eclectic mix of theoretical and philosophical influences, such as existentialism, phenomenology, pragmatism and humanism. Perls's Gestalt approach was among the first major psychotherapies to reject the traditional psychoanalytic focus on early life trauma in favor of an examination of a person's emotions and perceptions in the present moment. Still popular today, Gestalt practitioners can be found all over the world working with individuals, couples and groups.
