At a time when Charlie Kelman was very controversial and in the face of great institutional distrust, the American Journal of Ophthalmology went out on a limb and published this landmark paper that changed the entire nature of cataract surgery. It may have taken decades to gain broad acceptance, however, the very basis of present day cataract surgery can be laid at the door of this paper. At the time surgery was all inpatient for days with limitations like no leaning over below the waist or lifting anything heavier than a small book for 3-4 months at which time coke bottle aphakic spectacles or contact lenses for the adventurous were fitted.
