Caring for the Most Vulnerable: The Social Determinants of Health

THIS ISSUE FOCUSES on the care of our most extreme of ages: the very young and the very old. Each of these populations presents unique challenges across the surgical continuum, from pre-surgical assessment and planning to discharge. We have always recognized that children are not, nor should they be treated as small adults. We are also rapidly realizing that the elderly should not be “cared for as usual,” but in fact require extensive preoperative assessment and ongoing tailored interventions across the surgical continuum in an effort to ensure that, first and foremost, the scheduled surgery is indeed necessary and will improve their quality of life.
