Potential limitations of irradiation stent implantation in unresectable malignant biliary obstruction
Recently, Zhu et al. assessed the efficacy of the irradiation stent compared to the uncovered self-expandable metallic stent (SEMS) in patients with unresectable Bismuth-Corlette related malignant biliary obstruction (MBO).1 They showed that, compared with SEMS, the implantation of an irradiation stent provided prolonged stent patency, decreased rate of stent restenosis, and longer survival.1 Therefore, 125I seed-loaded stent is more promising than biliary stent alone for MBO because of the radiation effect of the particle.
