Lopez-Miranda, Eduardo Muñoz, Marco A. CalzadoAbstractN-acyl-dopamines are endolipids with neuroprotective, antiinflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. Previously, we showed the ability of these compounds to induce HIF-1α stabilization. Hypoxia and HIF-1α play an important role in the most relevant stages of diabetic pathogenesis. This work analyzes the possible role ...

Conclusion. VACs occur in approximately 12.5 per 100,000 deformity patients, with a rate five times higher in patients with kyphosis. More than 50% of these complications occur within 24 hours postoperatively. Nearly half of these complications resolve completely, and another 19% improve postoperatively. Level of Evidence: 4

Authors: Migdal A, Abrahamson M, Peters A, Vint N Abstract Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a growing problem in the United States, affecting 30.3 million Americans, or 9.4% of the US population. Given that T2DM is a progressive disease, intensification of rapid acting insulin (RAI) to address hyperglycemia is often required. The American Diabetes Association and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes recommend individualizing the treatment approach to glucose control, considering factors such as age, health behaviors, comorbidities, and life expectancy. There are several validated treatment algorithm...

Objectives: To investigate the risk of stroke in SSNHL patients. Study Design: A longitudinal follow-up cohort study. Setting: The Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort from 2002 to 2013. Patients: The 4,944 SSNHL participants were matched with 19,776 controls for age, sex, income, region of residence, hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. The SSNHL subjects were diagnosed (International Classification of Disease [ICD]-10: H91.2), underwent an audiometry examination, and were treated with steroids. The history of hemorrhagic stroke, ischemic stroke, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipide...

Conclusions: This study showed that G3 EOM was unresponsive to conservative glucocorticoid treatment and required granulation tissue removal. Classification based on the middle ear pathology is useful for determining the most appropriate and successful treatment for EOM.

A morbidly-obese 57-year-old diabetic and hypertensive man with chronic kidney disease, diastolic heart failure, and bilateral hearing loss was found to have soft tissue masses/densities in the lateral aspect of both auditory canals on local examination and on imaging. He underwent biopsies of both ear canal masses and histologic examination revealed amyloid deposits in the dermis. These deposits were confirmed as AL (amyloid light chain) kappa-type amyloid by laser mass spectrometry. A systemic work-up showed plasma cell dyscrasia with 9% kappa light chain restricted plasma cells in the bone marrow as well as amyloid depo...

Conclusions: Diabetes mellitus was not associated with the development of ICU delirium. For hypoglycemia, only a nonsignificant odds ratio for ICU delirium could be noted. Hyperglycemia and the occurrence of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia on the same day were associated with ICU delirium but only in patients without diabetes. Our study supports the institution of measures to prevent glucose dysregulation in nondiabetic ICU patients and contributes to the understanding of the determinants of delirium.

Authors: Athavale AS, Bentley JP, Banahan BF, McCaffrey DJ, Pace PF, Vorhies DW Abstract OBJECTIVES: To develop a self-reported measure for medication adherence and compare its ability to predict proportion of days covered (PDC) with contemporary scales. METHODS: Retrospective prescription fill data from three community pharmacies in the Southeastern US were assessed to identify patients that are 18 years of age or older, and have received at least one medication for diabetes, hypertension, or dyslipidemia. A cross-sectional survey containing the Medication adherence Estimation and Differentiation Scale (MEDS),...
