Alzheimer's disease is a complex condition because the brain is a complex environment. Neurodegeneration is caused by the accumulation of two forms of protein aggregate, amyloid-β and tau. There is evidence to suggest that each can spur the generation of the other, and that they act in synergy to cause worse harm to the brain than either would alone, but the present consensus is that amyloid-β precedes tau in the development of the condition. It may even turn out to be the case that tau causes the majority of the damage in the later stages of the condition, not amyloid-β. Whether this means that amylo...

Data on the production of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) in leukemia patients are scant. Phagocytosis, hydrogen peroxide, neutrophil elastase and myeloperoxidase enzymatic activity as well as NETs formation were studied in 10 pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia and 7 pediatric acute myeloid leukemia (AML) patients after induction chemotherapy. Median neutrophil elastase activity and NETs formation were lower in AML versus acute lymphoblastic leukemia (41% vs. 90%, P=0.005 and 51% vs. 94%, P=0.008, respectively). AML patients had more episodes of febrile neutropenia during the first 2 blocks of treatment (100% vs....

Conclusions: FDG PET-CT seems to be superior to bone scan in the detection of bone metastasis in all districts except skull bones. For pulmonary metastasis smaller than 7 mm, FDG PET-CT is less sensitive than CT. FDG PET-CT may have an important role in initial staging of Ewing sarcoma and subsequent evaluation of response to therapy.

Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is the most common malignancy affecting adolescents and young adults. Treatment with a combination of chemotherapy and radiation results in cure rates of>90%. However, radiation therapy causes significant late effects and avoiding radiation entirely for patients who respond to chemotherapy is an accepted strategy. Since 2011, 28 consecutive patients diagnosed with classic HL have been treated with doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine (ABVD) for 4 to 6 cycles. Patients who achieved a complete metabolic response (CMR) as assessed by [18F] fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomograph...

We present the case of a woman referred to our department at 34 weeks of pregnancy with a fetal ultrasonographic scan showing a mass that had developed within the right maxilla with invasion of the orbit. A retrospective examination showed that this tumor had been present since the 12th week of pregnancy. At 39+4 weeks of gestation, a boy was born. He presented a black firm aspect in the maxilla. A computed tomographic scan and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a soft tissue swelling over the right maxilla, extending into the orbit but without invasion of the globe. Surgical biopsy confirmed a melanotic neuroectodermal t...

This report will focus on the diagnostic imaging, treatment, and outcomes for 3 cases of Rosai-Dorfman disease. Imaging has typically utilized computed tomography (CT)/magnetic resonance imaging to detect extranodal involvement. However, the addition of fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/CT scans has shown value in identifying lesions unidentified or ambiguous on other modalities. Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/CT detected disease involvement in 2 instances either not reported or not felt to be significant on correlative CT imaging. Areas of involvement included the stomach/liver in case 1, an...

By Christian Jarrett Does the prospect of taking a “Facebook holiday” fill you with dread as you picture a life of social isolation, or does it sound like an appealing and refreshing chance to change priorities? A new paper in the Journal of Social Psychology has investigated the psychological effects of taking time off from using Facebook. Given that Facebook helps keep us connected but can also expose us to many social stressors, like envy and gossip, the researchers, led by Eric Vanman at the University of Queensland, expected to find a Facebook break would be associated with a drop in life-satisfaction, but...

Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) and myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) techniques (single photon emission computed tomography, SPECT, or positron emission tomography, PET) are well-established non-invasive modalities for the management of patients with known or suspected coronary artery disease (CAD), allowing high diagnostic accuracy and robust prognostic stratification. A recent multicenter head-to-head comparison between CCTA and the other second-level imaging modalities including stress echocardiography, nuclear imaging and cardiac magnetic resonance showed CCTA as the more accurate method in patients w...
