Medical Colleagues ‘In Awe’ Of Ebola Victim Rick Sacra

WORCESTER (CBS) – Dr. Rick Sacra’s colleagues at Family Health Center in Worcester are praising the local doctor who was diagnosed with the Ebola virus while working with patients in Liberia. Dr. Greg Culley, Sacra’s supervisor at the Worcester clinic, said Sacra knew the potential dangers involved with his return trip to Liberia. “On the day before he left I asked him if he knew what he was getting into,” Culley told WBZ-TV’s Ken MacLeod. “He said he did, but he had to go.” Family Health Center president Frances Anthes said Sacra has a passion for his role as a missionary physician, so when she heard that Sacra was planning to leave for Liberia a month earlier than expected due to two Ebola cases, she was not surprised. “So I was not shocked when he said he would go back early because that’s the kind of responsibility that I think he felt to taking care of patients in Liberia,” said Anthes. Culley said he was in touch with Sacra during his trip through email. Several times Culley said he asked Sacra if he had received his protective gear, but Sacra had not answered his inquiries. Sacra, who graduated from UMass Medical Center, has worked at Family Health Center for about 20 years. “I’m in awe of him. We’re all in awe of him,” Culley told MacLeod. “He is probably the closest thing a living human being can be to a saint.” MORE LOCAL NEWS FROM CBS BOSTON NECC Supervising Pharmacist Arrested At Logan AirportPlymouth Shark Attack Survivor In...
