In place of its reputation for cruelty and Gothic gloom, eyewitness reports and statistics suggest that life inside could be more wholesome than outside, for an ordinary, poor Londoner, with three meals a day, ale, clean bedding, the chance to exercise, and unlimited visits from friends and relations.
