A little bit about me: I went to two different 4-year undergraduate schools (transferred out of the first one due to clinical depression). Let's call them college 1 and college 2 (the most recent college I am at). Currently a senior in undergrad, with 3 quarters left of school (hoping I can raise my GPA in that time). I am planning on taking a gap year and in that time working with a local community in a healthcare-related way. Race/ethnicity: Chinese, Mexican, White... Do I have a chance at a top medical school?

Conclusions: Impaired fibrinolysis, mainly driven by plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 increase and thrombin activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor activation, is an early manifestation of sepsis and may precede the development of thrombocytopenia. Thrombin activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor level, in particular, proved to be an independent predictor of mortality, which may improve risk stratification of patients with severe sepsis.

There is little information on the impact of pain on sexual health in later life. The aim of this analysis was to determine the association between self-reported pain and sexual health in older men and women. Data were collected for the nationally representative English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Community-dwelling adults aged 50 years and older completed the Sexual Relationships and Activities Questionnaire in Wave 6 (2012/2013). Participants were asked (waves 1-6 [2002-2013]) whether they were “often troubled with pain” and, how severe was their pain; mild, moderate, or severe. The association between pain...

Primary burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is defined as an “intraoral burning or dysaesthetic sensation, recurring daily… more than 3 months, without clinically evident causative lesions” (IHS 2013). In addition to pain, taste alterations are frequent (dysgeusia, xerostomia). Although lacking clinical signs of neuropathy, more accurate diagnostic methods have shown neuropathic involvement at various levels of the neuraxis in BMS: peripheral small fiber damage (thermal quantitative sensory testing, electrogustatometry, epithelial nerve fiber density), trigeminal system lesions in the periphery or the brainstem...

I have commented before on the falling life expectancy in the United States, following two decades during which gains lagged those in the other wealthy countries.I previously linked to this editorial in BMJ by two Americans, and I emphasized their discussion of the opioid epidemic, alcohol abuse and suicide as key factors in the recent decline. I put less emphasis on life expectancy in the U.S. falling behind in the longer term. While the U.S. is among the wealthiest countries, it has a higher poverty rate than most others, and provides far less in the way of basic family support, educational opportunity, and health care ac...
