Accuracy of computed tomography in diagnosis of intra-abdominal injuries in stable patients with anterior abdominal stab wounds: a systematic review and meta-analysis - Baron BJ, Benabbas R, Kohler C, Biggs C, Roudnitsky V, Paladino L, Sinert R.

BACKGROUND: Work-up for patients presenting to the Emergency Department (ED) following an anterior abdominal stab wound (AASW) has been debated since the 1960s. Experts agree that patients with peritonitis, evisceration, or hemodynamic instability should u...

AbstractPurposeThe purpose of this study was to analyze the frequency of visualization of anatomical bone features and their possible variations in the mandibular interforaminal region through cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).MethodsThis is a cross-sectional study that evaluated CBCT scans of the mandible of 141 women and 61 men, obtained by imaging archives from two private clinics of dental radiology. The study analyzed the frequency of visualization of: lingual symphyseal foramen (LSF), additional mental foramen (AdMF), absence of mental foramen (AbMF), mandibular incisive canal (MIC), and anterior loop (AL). Length...

CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that physicians in the participating hospitals prefer hospital admission of children with MTBI instead of CT despite the current recommendations of the national MTBI guideline in the Netherlands. PMID: 29775090 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

“Paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present moment and nonjudgmentally.” That’s how Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, describes mindfulness. In the book Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind, another thought leader in mindfulness, Shunryu Suzuki, says that, “In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s there are few.” In my experience, I’ve found that cultivating a beginner’s mind opens doors and improves clinical diagnosis. Medical training has phases, and clinicians in different phases think differently. In medical school, students learn...

Conclusion: By employing CBCT as a modern diagnostic imaging tool, findings of this study revealed that the frequency of various temporomandibular joint alterations on CBCT images is comparable in patients with and without TMD complaints, suggesting that some people with TMJ structural damage may not display clinical manifestations. Moreover, CBCT imaging might not be necessary for TMD patients and more attention should be given to clinical examination.

In the recently published article by Loewenstern et  al,1 the authors attempted to determine the utility of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in the diagnosis and management of compressive optic neuropathy secondary to fibrous dysplasia (FD). OCT is a relatively new imaging modality, which uses high-resolution cross-sections of the retina to determ ine the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness. The study evaluated 6 patients with cranial base FD for optic nerve compression and RNFL thinning, using computed tomography (CT) and OCT, respectively.

Zar, Kerry J. Ressler, Joseph D. Buxbaum, Dan J. Stein Prenatal exposure to maternal stress and depression has been identified as a risk factor for adverse behavioral and neurodevelopmental outcomes in early childhood. However, the molecular mechanisms through which maternal psychopathology shapes offspring development remain poorly understood. We applied transcriptome-wide screens to 149 umbilical cord blood samples from neonates born to...

In uncemented total hip arthroplasty (THA), low bone mineral density (BMD) is associated with aseptic loosening. BMD is usually assessed via dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) or quantitative computed tomography, which takes time and exposes patients to radiation. Due to its low risk profile, intraoperative measurement of the trabecular stability might be a useful alternative to DXA.

Publication date: 1 August 2018 Source:Journal of Membrane Science, Volume 559 Author(s): Lucie Vobecká, Miloš Svoboda, Jan Beneš, Tomáš Belloň, Zdeněk Slouka Chronopotentiometry is a powerful experimental technique for characterization of ion-exchange membranes, especially phenomena associated with ion transport and the occurrence of overlimiting current. One also uses this technique to estimate heterogeneity of ion-exchange membranes, or more precisely the fractions of conductive and nonconductive regions in the membrane, by measuring so called transition times and their substitution...

Conclusions: Our case demonstrates that histopathological defined diagnosis may significantly inform therapeutic decision-making in irresectable cholangiocarcinoma even in regard to conventional systemic therapy. In case of an undifferentiated carcinoma poly-chemotherapy may provide significant success. PMID: 29774134 [PubMed]
