Authors: Niu J, Qi Q, Fu K, Duan G, Liu C, Wang F Abstract BACKGROUND The present study aimed to describe a new safe and economical technique for medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction with satisfactory clinical outcomes, and present the results of a four-year follow-up. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty-two patients with recurrent patella dislocation, who underwent MPFL reconstruction with two semi-patellar tunnels and hardware-free patellar fixation between 2011 and 2013, were included in the study. Patella stability was tested by an apprehension test preoperatively and at follow-up. Knee function was eva...

From the Wood Library-Museum ’s Ben Z. Swanson Collection, this photograph (right) features signage (left) from a 1920s “Nap-A-Minit” dentist. From his office corner in Waterbury, Connecticut, Dr. Paul August Kumpitsch (1886 to 1949) was one of a large number of American dentists who so advertised their use of analgesic gas, either Somnoform or nitrous oxide-oxygen. Pioneered in Bordeaux, France, in 1901 by Dr. G eorges Rolland, Somnoform was an eclectic mixture of ethyl chloride, methyl chloride, and ethyl bromide, in a 12:7:1 ratio. A topical vapocoolant, Somnoform’s general anesthetic properties ...

Researchers from École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland and Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan have developed a way of imaging biochemicals in the body using electric current. The technique, named scanning electrochemical microscopy, has already been used to map out hemoglobin throughout a heart of a mouse. Other target molecules can also be used as natural imaging contrast agents, providing novel ways to analyze organs and tissues, with initial focus probably on cancerous lesions. Their technique works via a device with eight flexible electrodes. It is...

In this study, we report data logged for the different scenes and different loudness levels of 1,366 CI patients, as recorded by SCAN. Monitoring device use in cochlear implant recipients of all ages provides important information about the listening conditions encountered in recipients' daily lives that may support counseling and assist in the further management of their device settings. The findings for this large cohort of active CI users confirm differences between age groups concerning device use and exposure to various noise environments, especially between the youngest and oldest age groups, while similar levels of ...

The objective was to propose an accurate image-based assessment, working directly with the fresh surgical resection and not requiring specialized staff. The second challenge is the time and consequently ease of use, as surgeon’s and OR time are key factors in patient safety and treatment cost. Therefore, our solution shall provide access to high-resolution microscopy without requiring the processing of the sample onto microscope slides. There’s a broad continuum of image resolution through the spectrum of imaging techniques, but when it comes to subcellular resolution for tissue morphology inspection, good imag...

CONCLUSION: There is a significant burden of TBI managed by the PMTS. The cost of managing TBI each year is in the order of sixty million ZAR. A significant funding gap exists in our environment. This data does not include any data on the broader social costs of TBI. Investing in programs to reduce and prevent TBI is justified by the potential for significant savings.
