UC-Berkeley gets in on medtech accelerator in India

The University of California-Berkeley is reportedly getting in on a medtech accelerator in India, aiming to take local startups from the seed-funding stage to Series A rounds. The Bengaluru-based program, launched with incubator IKP Eden, plans to enroll 15 startups for each 18-week course, according to the Economic Times. The accelerator has so far accepted 11 companies out of the 250 that applied, the newspaper reported. “We have narrowed down on startups across a wide range of applications from a player that has created a wearable device for monitoring high risk pregnancy to a chip medical device for early detection of cancer. I am unable to disclose the finalized startup names due to [non-disclosure agreement] clauses at the moment,” Manav Subodh, senior fellow at UC Berkeley and head of the medtech accelerator, told the paper. Applicants “should ideally be technology that simplifies one’s understanding for critical or life-threatening medical problems but can be administered at affordable prices since rural healthcare needs in India have to be addressed,” Subodh said.
