Taking Bullying Out of Health Care: A Patient Safety Imperative

TODAY WE UNDERSTAND the importance of a healthy work environment and its culture; a healthy work environment and a culture of safety positively influence the patient. In 2004, the Institute  of Medicine released a report Keeping Patients Safe: Transforming the Work Environment of Nurses and discussed some of the factors related to favorable work environments for nurses, as well as the factors that contribute to a team's success or failure in error prevention, detection, and recovery. 1 Although the entire report provides guidance, there are some main areas related to improving collaboration and team functioning that are helpful in building a healthy work environment and a strong safety culture.
