Adolescence: The Love Lives of Digital Natives
The digital world puts a new spin on some of the timeless challenges of coming of age.
Although teenage pregnancy rates have declined, too many teens still use birth control methods incorrectly or inconsistently.
Researchers have uncovered a link between conception and soda: drinking it daily could harm your chances of becoming pregnant. This goes for men and women.
Conclusions Based on these results, health units should performs universal screening of pregnant women and hospitals should provide adequate prophylaxis, when indicated. PMID: 29451592 [PubMed - in process]
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of prenatal and postnatal high folic acid supplementation (FAS) on glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity, lipid metabolism, and expression of adiponectin in rats. The study included 20 female rats divided into two groups: control group and FAS group (receiving high folic acid supplemented diet). Both groups of female rats were mated and pregnancy confirmed. At parturition, the diet of 5 dams that were fed with control diet during gestation and their litters was changed to FAS diet and continued throughout lactation. Similarly, half of the dams that were previously fed wi...
A patient sent me this emailI had a query. I have conceived through IVF and ET was on Jan 6 th and my LMP was on Dec 20th.I got my ultrasound done on 16th Feb and in scan it showed the pregnancy is 5 weeks 6 days.If I calculate the growth of the baby from the date of the transfer, this seems fine, but if I calculate from the date of the LMP , it seems to be lagging behind.I am completely confused - can you please help ?This is a common problem, because IVF patients use their common sense and assume that doctors would calculate pregnancy dates based on the age of the embryo. Since they know the date of the embryo transfer, ...
In the decades since the introduction of ultrasound into routine obstetric practice, the advantages of ultrasound have moved beyond the simple ability to identify multiple pregnancies antenatally to the possibility of screening them for fetal anomalies, pre-eclampsia, preterm birth, and the complications specific to monochorionic pregnancies. Screening studies have often excluded twins because physiological differences impact on the validity and sensitivity of the screening tests in routine use in singletons, and therefore, the evidence of screening performance in multiple pregnancy lags behind the evidence from singleton pregnancies.
Conclusion: Pregnancy in WD patients on anticopper therapy is safe. The spontaneous abortion rate in treated patients was lower than that in therapy‐naïve patients. Although the teratogenic potential of copper chelators is a concern, the rate of birth defects in our cohort was low. Treatment for WD should be maintained during pregnancy, and patients should be monitored closely for hepatic and neurological symptoms. (Hepatology 2017).
Conclusion The present study shows that alcohol and drug use were associated with increased glutamate, and decreased glutamine levels, and alcohol use is associated with decreased serotonin levels. This study serves as a proof-of-concept that the metabolite profile of human first trimester serum samples could be used to detect alcohol exposure during pregnancy.

Abstract Background: Pravastatin (Pra) exerts protective effects on preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is a multifactorial and pathogenic pathway syndrome. The present study compared the effects of Pra on clinical manifestations of preeclampsia in different pathogenic pathways. Methods: Two different preeclampsia-like mouse models used in this study were generated with Nω-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) and used lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from day 7 of gestation, respectively. Pra treatment was administered on day 2 after the models were established in each group (L-NAME + Pra, LPS + Pra, and Control + Pra...
