June 15th is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
As the elderly population continues to grow, so does the likelihood of elder abuse taking place in our communities. June 15th is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and JEMS is pleased to provide several resources for more information about a difficult topic that often goes unreported. This year’s focus is financial exploitation, which is becoming prevalent in the elderly community. According to the United Nations, 5 to 10 per cent of older people globally may experience some kind of financial exploitation.
JEMS is excited to share with you an excellent resource from MerckManuals.com. The content, which is being highlighted on www.merckmanuals.com/home from June 5 through June 16, covers the following:
Preventing elder abuse
Recognizing the signs of elder abuse
Responding to elder abuse
Avoiding caregiver burnout
Self-neglect in the elderly
“While the entire content of The Merck Manuals is always available online, what we decide to call special attention to on the landing page is dynamic,” explained Editor-in-Chief Robert S. Porter, M.D. “We often look to highlight topics based on national observances and issues that have broad implications for society and public health.”
