Mean platelet volume: a novel predictive marker for mortality in patients with acute mesenteric ischemia?

Acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) is a rare syndrome in which inadequate blood flow through the mesenteric vessels causes ischemia and eventual gangrene of the bowel wall. Immediate diagnosis of this disease is vital, since it can lead to life-threatening conditions and even death. We read with great interest the article entitled "Mean Platelet Volume as a potential prognostic marker in patients with acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI)-retrospective study" by Altintoprak et al and wanted to discuss the place of MPV in determining the inflammatory status of the patient with acute mesenteric ischemia.
