Responders Reunite with Traumatic Cardiac Arrest Patient and Simple Thoracostomy Surviver

On February 24, 2016, Jonathan Arteaga was helping out with the family business moving mobile homes when something went terribly wrong. While leveling the mobile home, the building fell on top of him, pinning him, knee to chest under the 37,000 pound structure. The call went out to responders as an “inaccessible incident,” and had it not been for the quickness of the series of events to follow, Jonathan would have died underneath there. The 911 call was answered by a new dispatcher to the agency. Danielle of Montgomery County Hospital District “couldn’t forget” forget this call when she had to give the difficult instructions to leave Jonathan under the house until help arrived. Within minutes of the call, Deputy Crandell and Deputy Morris arrived on scene and determined that the patient still had a pulse and jumped into action to help. With limited resources to move the heavy structure, the deputies called for help from Peter Baty of Magnolia Towing who used his wrecker to help safely move the building so they could get to Jonathan. During this time, Jonathan’s heart had stopped beating. Magnolia Volunteer Fire Department arrived just as Jonathan was being pulled out from under the building and were able to immediately begin CPR. Once Montgomery County Hospital District arrived on scene, the paramedics were able to initiate advanced interventions to try to resuscitate Jonathan.
