Address to the Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean, Sixty-third Session

3 October 2016 - In her address, Dr Margaret Chan drew attention to the significant deterioration in the humanitarian situation, with level three emergencies in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen. She drew attention to more than 100 attacks, often deliberate, on hospitals and health care facilities since the start of this year, and said this must stop. On the positive side, both Afghanistan and Pakistan are making headway in polio eradication, and Egypt has reduced the price of hepatitis C treatment from the launch price of $84,000 per treatment course to only $172.
