Authors: Mohamad NV, Ima-Nirwana S, Chin KY Abstract Osteoporosis is one of the major health issues associated with menopause-related estrogen deficiency. Various reports suggest that the hormonal changes related to menopausal transition may lead to derangement of redox homeostasis and ultimately oxidative stress. Estrogen deficiency and oxidative stress may enhance the expression of genes involved in inflammation. All these factors may contribute, in synergy, to the development of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Previous studies suggest that estrogen may act as an antioxidant to protect the bone against oxidative str...

CONCLUSIONS: The interplay between microbiota and the host closely involves the immune system. In particular, the vaginal microbiota is classically characterized by Lactobacilli even if vaginal microbiome of asymptomatic woman of reproductive age includes multiple aerobic and facultative or obligate anaerobic species. The role of microbiota and immune system in determining gynecological and obstetric events has been studied throughout recent years reaching new advancements. Therefore, additional studies are needed to better comprehend the complexity of the issue. PMID: 32495903 [PubMed - in process]

ConclusionsThere appears to be no association between sex hormones and history of kidney stones. Whether there is a more complex interaction of sex hormone levels and the shared association with factors such as metabolic syndrome requires additional investigation. Further studies matching menopausal status for women are necessary to further investigate the potential  relationship between estrogen and kidney stones.
