Out and About in Peoria

by Carmen Howard Visiting Assistant Regional Librarian & Visiting Assistant Professor UIC Library of the Health Sciences – Peoria Exhibiting at the Hult Center for Healthy Living’s Annual Seniors on the Go Health Fair was an excellent opportunity for the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Library of the Health Sciences in Peoria to connect with the community and share information. The Health Fair is open to all seniors (55 years+). The Health Fair included health screenings, massages, lectures, live accordion music, and breakfast – all at no cost to the attendees! This year the Health Fair drew more than three hundred and fifty people. Well over one hundred and fifty of these people stopped by the Library’s booth to learn about MedlinePlus, NIHSeniorHealth, and the services of the Library. It was very rewarding to introduce people to MedlinePlus and NIHSeniorHealth. Several attendees acknowledged knowing that they needed to be careful when searching online for medical information but admitted that they were not sure where to go or how to know who to trust. Others were happy to know that they could come in or call the library for help. You can read more about the event in this article from the Peoria Journal Star (http://www.pjstar.com/article/20140319/NEWS/140318718). When you read the article, be sure to check out the booth in the background with the red tablecloth – that’s us!
