Severe Hyponatremia Secondary to Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter in a Neonate
Pericardial tamponade in neonates is a rare clinical condition, which may be fatal if recognition and appropriate management are delayed. It has been suggested that neonatal peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) placement is associated with pericardial effusion and tamponade; the incidence of and mortality from neonatal PICC-associated pericardial tamponade are 0.5–2% and 45–67%, respectively.1,2
