Reinforcement Pathology and Obesity: Leadfoot and Worn Brakes

BSSR Lecture Obesity is due in part to excessive motivation to eat, and inadequate ability to delay gratification. Food is a strong reinforcer as those high in food reinforcement consume more food, and food reinforcement is cross-sectionally and prospectively related to obesity. The inability to delay gratification is also cross-sectionally and prospectively related to obesity. Excessive motivation to eat and the inability to delay gratification interact, such that those who find food most reinforcing, and are unable to delay gratification, eat the most food and benefit the least from obesity treatment programs. Methods to intervene on these components of reinforcement pathology will be reviewed, with a focus on episodic future thinking, a form of prospection or mental time travelAir date: 3/21/2014 1:00:00 PM
