The Critical Importance of Hepatic Venous Blood Flow Doppler Assessment for Patients in Shock

Hepatic venous blood flow can be easily obtained using bedside ultrasound with either transthoracic or transesophageal echocardiography. Six critically ill patients with shock associated with absent or significantly reduced hepatic venous blood flow in the presence of normal or increased pulmonary venous flow are presented. In all these patients, the etiology of shock was secondary to increased resistance to venous return from either an intraabdominal process or through extrinsic or intrinsic occlusion of the proximal inferior vena cava or right atrium. These shock situations are secondary to increased resistance to venous return. Their treatment is highly specific and typically involves a surgical intervention.

Publication date: Available online 17 September 2019Source: Trends in Food Science &TechnologyAuthor(s): Swati Mahato, Zhiwei Zhu, Da-Wen SunAbstractBackgroundStability of food is a great challenge that encompasses the interaction among the constituents, processing conditions and thermal history. The frozen storage of food sometimes incurs possible harmful effect due to the formation of large ice crystal and destruction of the cell structure. Glass transition state is a second-order transition of matter where a system reaches a thermodynamically non-equilibrium state due to the immobility of molecules, and it is a univ...

Fourier transform infrared assay was performed and the microstructure of treated tofu whey was evaluated. The results showed ultrasound application significantly increased the total phenolic and flavonoid content, isoflavone gluco...

The evidence is clear: Reduce calories and/or reduce dietary fat to lose weight and you are at high-risk for developing gallstones, even within a few weeks of starting such a diet. Serial gallbladder ultrasound studies have repeatedly demonstrated this phenomenon. Among the studies documenting this effect: The greater the reduction in calories, the greater the likelihood of gallstones and need for cholecystectomy It doesn’t take much in the way of fat intake to avoid gallstone formation during weight loss Summary of the studies documenting that higher fat intake prevents gallstones during weight loss This ha...

ConclusionsThe incidence of VTE complications after endovenous laser ablation was low. Furthermore, the value of performing postoperative ultrasound for VTE management seems to be low because the occurrence of severe VTE complications could not be predicted by lower extremity venous ultrasound. Although the perioperative detection of VTE complications by this modality resulted in the early administration of anticoagulant therapy and may have contributed to improved prognosis, the number of those patients was limited.

Healthcare systems are often compared with the aviation industry. Progress in both is highly desired but must always be achieved with safety in mind. Everyone wants to get from point A to point B faster and more comfortably, but how much risk of uncertainty is one ready to accept to achieve that extra speed? Both industries also share the aspect of competition for customers. In the field of localized prostate cancer, patients have an ever-increasing choice of options: radical surgery (open vs laparoscopic vs robot-assisted), external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) (with photons or protons), brachytherapy (low-dose rate or h...

Conclusions: Lung ultrasound may help highlight pulmonary gangrene, a poorly-known disease, with this new ultrasonographic description. The next step will be to ascertain the relation between this new ultrasound feature and pulmonary gangrene and to assess how this bedside diagnosis could impact the prognosis of the disease.

Publication date: Available online 16 September 2019Source: Sensors and Actuators A: PhysicalAuthor(s): Hojong ChoiAbstractCompared with low-frequency (≤15 MHz) ultrasonic transducers, high-frequency ultrasonic transducers provide higher spatial resolutions while reducing the echo-signal amplitudes and bandwidths owing to the size reduction of the piezoelectric materials. Therefore, performance improvement of high-frequency ultrasonic transducers can enhance the performance of the whole ultrasound instrument. To improve the echo-signal quality, such as the amplitudes, signal distortions, and bandwidths, negative-group-d...
