Increasing the Safety of Cholecystectomy in the Rural Setting with Mandatory Intraoperative Cholangiogram

Common bile duct injury (CBD) is a catastrophic complication of cholecystectomy. There is literature that supports the use of an intraoperative cholangiogram (IOC) to decrease the incidence of CBD injury. From 2011-2013, there were 3 CBD injuries at our rural institution. Because both permanent and locum tenems perform surgery at our hospital, we implemented an IOC policy in hopes of decreasing our incidence of CBD injuries.
