Internal Medicine Applicants ’ Experiences with Program Signaling and Second Looks: A Multi-institutional Survey

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) piloted a supplemental application for the standard residency application in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) during the 2021-2022 residency cycle. Specifically, the supplemental application provided applicants the opportunity to indicate geographic and program preferences1. During the most recent residency application cycle, internal medicine applicants could signal interest in seven programs. While AAMC provides broad findings on the supplemental application from previous application cycles, limited data exist regarding interviews granted from program signaling and applicant perception and use of signaling.
