The Multidisciplinary Landscape of Gender Affirmation Surgical Training

In the United States, 0.52% of adults and 1.43% of youth identify as transgender, signaling the demand for gender affirming healthcare to more than double within the next decade.1Transgender and gender diverse (TGGD) patients already experience increased barriers to healthcare, including a general lack of providers, discrimination, and financial barriers.2-4 As the TGGD population grows, surgical training must be prepared to meet the needs of the systemically disadvantaged TGGD community. With only 10 fellowship positions offered in gender affirmation surgery (GAS), residency programs must step up to meet the needs of the TGGD population by disseminating GAS education and clinical exposure in their curricula.
