Letter from the editor: First do no harm —biotin for hair and nails

Biotin-containing supplements continue to be marketed over the counter as “dermatologist-recommended” for the treatment of hair and nail disorders and all dermatologists should be aware of data surrounding efficacy and safety of high-dose biotin. Though its use as a hair and nail growth supplement is prevalent, there is limited research demonstrating the efficacy of b iotin, mostly limited to isolated case reports. While rare disorders like inherited biotinidase deficiency clearly benefits from high-dose biotin, there are few other conditions like brittle nail syndrome and uncombable hair with even anecdotal reports of benefit.
