Terminological Insights in Ludwig Angina: Evaluating Pseudo Tongue, Double Tongue, and Ludwig Sign

We read with interest the manuscript by Minagawa and Nagasaki, on the “double-tongue sign” in Ludwig angina and provide further perspective on the accuracy of this terminology in medical discourse.1 Wilhelm Friedrich von Ludwig, in his 1836 paper “Ueber eine Form von Halsentzündung” (About a form of strep throat), described the oral cavity, neck, and systemic symptoms occurring as an inflammatory superficial and deep-seated soft tissue infection in the submandibular space and less frequently involving the parotid and sublingual glands.
