Obesity and Concomitant Weight Change Remain Challenging Comorbidities for Arthroplasty Surgeons to Manage

As implant longevity and medical management continue to be enhanced, a greater proportion of obese patients are becoming candidates for total hip (THA) and knee arthroplasty (TKA). Obesity and concomitant weight loss (and even gain) represent a fascinating, yet enigmatic aspect of arthroplasty care. Despite the use of body mass index (BMI) thresholds and cut-offs, considerable controversy and debate in the arthroplasty community exists regarding the management of these challenging patients. In fact, the editors of The Journal of Arthroplasty recently published an editorial on this very topic, discussing the impact of obesity on outcomes in both primary and revision arthroplasty settings.
