Immune responses at barrier surfaces are differentially managed by multiple skin-resident CD8+ T-cell subsets, including IFN- γ–producing tissue-resident memory T (TRM) 1 cells, which are associated with viral and tumor control, and IL-17–producing (TRM17) cells, which are associated with bacterial defense and wound healing. Park et al (2023) demonstrated that TRM1 and TRM17 cells employ distinct molecular networks t o establish tissue residency. TRM1 cells are programmed by the canonical T-bet–Hobit–IL-15-axis, whereas TRM17 cells are regulated by the ICOS–cMaf–IL-17 network.
