When we began investigating burnout and physician job satisfaction in 1995 (with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Physician Worklife Study1), there were few invited talks, a very few journals who published the work, and many people wondered if the work was scholarly. Physician burnout was 27% (60% higher in women than men2) compared to the current situation with burnout rates over 50%3 (still 50% higher in women4) and health care workers (HCWs) leaving their jobs in droves5. Chief wellness officers have become commonplace as have wellness committees.
