Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally. WHO estimates state that approximately 41 million people die from NCDs each year, and NCDs account for 74  % of the global deaths [1]. Previously often assumed to be diseases mainly associated with wealthier countries, NCDs are in reality a very important and growing challenge in many low and middle-income countries (LMICs) [2]. The poor, vulnerable and those from socially disadvantaged groups are oft en most likely to be affected by NCDs.
