Translational research – Adolescents at-risk for health and developmental problems and the intersection with the demands of caregiving

Adolescents are at-risk for health and developmental problems related to identity development, body-image, and sexuality, as well as the need to integrate social experiences into their everyday lives. Not only are adolescents confronted with societal stereotypes for healthy weight, overweight and obesity, but when adolescents are overweight, they face are at-risk for experiencing weight stigma from peers, healthcare professionals, and society. The difficulties of conforming to societal ideals and “looking normal” challenge adolescents' identity development and self-image as they attempt to meet societal stereotypes.
