The Transition to Retirement for the Clinician Educator: A Gap in the Academic Life Cycle of Pediatric Faculty

A recent article by Tolleson-Rinehart et al in The Journal of Pediatrics addresses career transitions of senior faculty, surveying the views of Pediatrics chairs and faculty at the professorial level.1 While illuminating and providing a valuable update, a number of respondents were faculty funded for research or concerned about continued funding. In contrast, clinician educators (CEs), typically with modest or no scholarly research funding, constitute the majority of those who provide the patient care, teaching, and educational and sometimes clinical scholarship in academic health centers (AHCs).
