The Graying of a Pediatric Urologist: My 40 Years of Urologic Ultrasound

Five decades ago, ultrasound (US) and its 2-dimensional images, the original shades of gray pertinent to urologists, began to provide anatomic detail without exposure to ionizing radiation. Initially US was viewed as a preliminary and non-invasive survey that permitted the Urologist access to more diagnostic anatomic or functional imaging. Power doppler ultrasound, contrast enhanced imaging, tissue elasticity measurement, and continued progress in image processing across all frequencies, has made US the diagnostic procedure of choice for many genitourinary conditions.
