Developing Hospital Nurses ’ Clinical Reasoning Abilities in Assessing and Managing Clinical Deterioration Using a Virtual Patient Simulation: A Quasi-Experimental Study

Early recognition of patient deterioration in general wards followed by timely and appropriate management can help reduce the need for unplanned admissions to intensive care units and the length of hospitalisations, and can even improve survival rates (Vincent et al., 2018). Although early warning scores (EWS) have been widely implemented in hospitals to support the nurses ’ role in identifying clinically deteriorating ward patients, delays or failure to recognise and escalate the care of such patients continue to occur (Eddahchouri et al., 2021; Ede, Jeffs, Vollam,& Watkinson, 2020; Tirkkonen et al., 2020).
