Increasing Clinical Complexity

In JAMA Internal Medicine, Naik et al present the results of a population-based serial, cross-sectional evaluation of trends in the complexity of hospitalized inpatients in British Columbia, Canada, between 2002 and 2017. The question that the authors pose —how has the complexity of hospitalized inpatients changed over time—is an important one and has implications for how we design, deliver, and pay for care as well as how we train and support our increasingly strained health care workforce.
