Sexually transmitted diseases and HIV in transgender patients
The word transgender is composed of trans, which means “across” in Latin, and gender, and it describes people whose gender identity does not correspond with their birth sex. It is the “T” in LGBTQ+, an abbreviation that encompasses the range of sexual orientations and gender identities. Our review describes the range of human gender identities, as well as variations in anatomy–particularly after gender-affirming treatment–as they pertain to sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
