Dr Kevin El-Hayek (Cleveland, OH): Again, Dr Ujiki and his research team have added a wrinkle into the treatment algorithm of patients with medically refractory reflux disease. In the US, 30,000 patients go on to have some kind of anti-reflux operation each year. Many surgeons are moving the needle towards less invasive options such as partial fundoplication and magnetic sphincter augmentation, but any transabdominal approach is going to have with it a small but real risk of complications that could be potentially avoided in patients who have a purely endoscopic method.
