Gaps in literature on enhanced recovery after thoracic surgery: Considering social determinants of health

Disparities across social determinants of health (SDOH) present considerable challenges in the field of thoracic surgery. These determinants, such as race and ethnicity, income, and neighborhood, heavily dictate one's health and standard of living. Current literature demonstrates such disparities in the diagnosis and treatment of thoracic pathologies.1,2 One article found that Black patients are diagnosed with lung cancer at an earlier age, with less pack-years, and are less likely to be screened for lung cancer compared to White patients.
