Blue donut technique for staining the trabecular meshwork in young phakic patients

Angle-based procedures, such as gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy (GATT), can be particularly challenging in patients with little to no trabecular meshwork (TM) pigmentation, a situation frequently encountered in pediatric patients. The TM can be nicely delineated with trypan blue, but the long-term effects of trypan blue on a clear crystalline lens are unknown. The blue donut technique allows staining of the TM without inadvertent staining of the lens and increases the concentration of the stain in the TM.
