Research training as an integral part of surgical resident education: Central Surgical Association presidential address

It has been an honor to serve as President of the Central Surgical Association during the past year. I have enjoyed working with many of the past presidents of the Central Surgical Association in various societies, including the Central Surgical Association, the American Surgical Association, the American College of Surgeons, and the American Board of Surgery (Figure  1). These colleagues have had a major influence on my career in academic surgery. I would also like to acknowledge and thank the most recent past presidents and our current president-elect of the Central Surgical Association; these individuals are thoughtful leaders in academic surgery and have be en tremendously helpful during my presidency as colleagues and friends.
